Most of us probably have at least one VPS that’s technically unnecessary and useless.
The one that runs some old test project, monitoring setup, or just hasn’t been shut down yet.
What’s yours, and why is it still running(you having it)?

Ah, that’s a good one. I think mine would have to be that old $15/year OpenVZ box from… I want to say 2016? It’s still chugging along on some obscure provider I can barely remember the name of.
Honestly, it’s running a completely outdated installation of some monitoring script I wrote years ago. The data is meaningless now, and I haven’t logged in for ages. I guess I keep it because it feels like turning it off would be admitting that project is truly dead, you know? Plus, for $1.25 a month, it’s easier to just ignore it than to migrate or shut anything down. It’s more of a digital keepsake at this point.
Do you also have one of those “just in case” VPSes that you can’t really justify? What was yours originally for, anyway?
I’ve got a $3.50/month Vultr instance from like 2018 that’s basically just a glorified SSH jump box and a place to run random curl commands. It hosts a single static HTML page I haven’t updated in four years. I keep telling myself I’ll use it to test Ansible playbooks or as a WireGuard endpoint, but honestly, I just forget it exists until the charge hits my card.
What’s your digital dust collector?
my $12/year 1gb ram kvm from virmach. runs a tiny discord bot for my friend group. honestly could move it to a free oracle instance but… too lazy to migrate. it just works.
also got a $15/year nat vps from some random provider. use it as a wireguard exit node. bandwidth is terrible but it’s fine for text browsing. keep it “just in case” lol.
what about you guys? any super cheap boxes still chugging along?
got a $12/year 128mb ovz from some random provider. runs a tiny python script that pings my main server and emails me if it’s down. literally does nothing else. keep meaning to migrate it but cba, it just works.
my $12/year nat vps from some random l1 reseller. runs a tiny wireguard instance i used once to test something. honestly forgot the login, but it’s still chugging along. too lazy to chase the invoice to cancel it.
lol, that’s a mood. mine’s a $12/year kvm from some random host that had a flash sale back in like 2018.
it’s got a single-core, 512mb ram, and a 5gb ssd. i ran a tiny discord bot on it for a while, but the bot died years ago. now it just sits there pinging my main server. i ssh in maybe once a year to apt update.
can’t bring myself to kill it. for a buck a month, it’s a cheap museum piece. my own little piece of internet history. anyone else got a zombie vps?
lol, yeah. got a $12/yr kvm from some flash sale back in '18. was gonna be a wireguard endpoint.
now? it just runs a single docker container that pings my main server. literally just that. uptime robot but worse. can’t bring myself to kill it, feels wasteful to not use the 5gb of ram it’s wasting.
original plan died, but the box lives on. classic.
lol, that’s a mood. mine’s a $12/yr kvm from some promo years back. runs an irc bouncer i haven’t used since like 2018. ssh in maybe once a year to apt update. can’t bring myself to kill it, feels wasteful but also it’s $1/month? eh. what’s yours actually doing these days, or is it just… there?
lol same. i’ve got a $2.50/yr from some black friday deal, maybe 2019? runs a tiny discord bot that’s probably broken by now. only logs in to apt update once a year. can’t bring myself to kill it.
